What Is A Crash Rating?
When planning your perimeter security measures, it’s important to look for barriers that will safeguard pedestrians and staff or visitor vehicles. To ensure the right level of protection, you’ll need to look for the appropriate crash rating.
A crash rating is a standardised method of showing how much impact a barrier can withstand. It looks at vehicle weight as well as how fast it’s travelling and how far past the barrier it will end up in the event of a crash.
Crash ratings in the UK are determined by impact tests in line with BSI PAS 68 specifications. In the video below, you can see one of these tests in action, with an HGV impacting the SSCB Crash Rated Road Blocker at 48km/h.
BSI PAS68:2010 Crash Test Specifications:
V7500(N2)/48/90:0/0
TEST METHOD (V, P, D) VEHICLE, PENDULUM OR DESIGN
TEST WEIGHT (KG) PLUS VEHICLE TYPE
48 IS THE SPEED IN KM/H
90 IS THE IMPACT ANGLE
0.0 (FIRST DIGIT) IS THE VEHICLE PENETRATION
0.0 (SECOND DIGIT) IS THE DISPERSION DISTANCE OVER 25KG PAST FRONT OF BARRIER
What Is A Crash Rated Vehicle Barrier?
Crash-rated vehicle barriers that meet the specifications above come in a range of formats — from bollards to automatic rising arm barriers. One of the most effective options for high-security areas is a crash rated road blocker.
These wedge-shaped barriers are embedded into the ground to create an effective block in the road so no vehicles can pass. Made from extremely durable materials and designed to be highly visible, they deter and protect.
What Is The Ideal Height For A Road Blocker?
The ideal height for a crash tested road blocker depends on the level of security needed. They usually range from 340mm to 800mm, with lower barriers blocking cars and vans, while higher road blockers can withstand heavy-duty vehicles.
Shorter road blockers offer substantial security for car parks and gated communities. However, if you need a high-security barrier, a height of 600mm to 800mm offers the best protection. These are designed for high-risk areas, including prisons, military bases, and government buildings.
SSCB Crash Rated Road Blocker
Responding to market demands, our perimeter access specialists at Security Solutions have developed a cost-effective crash rated road blocker which meets BSI PAS 68:2010 (impact test specification for vehicle security barriers).
Recognising the need for a road blocker to be crash tested at just 30mph, our SSCB Crash Rated Road Blocker ensures utmost perimeter security and zero site penetration. As you can see from our crash test video, this effective road blocker can bring 7.5-tonne vehicles to a complete halt.
Its cheese wedge shape sinks into the roadway as one complete unit for ease of installation, and its black and yellow chevron finish acts as an aggressive visual deterrent. However, if you require another colour, we can provide a range of other designs that adhere to British Standards — please contact us to discuss your options.
The SSCB Crash Rated Road Blocker is constructed from galvanised steel and features two hydraulic rams for a reliable lift on impact. It’s also bedded into a pit with integral sub-pumps for drainage, so you won’t have to worry about water build-up.
