Bollards are a popular security measure for a wide range of applications, from government buildings to shopping centres. If you’re working on a project that requires access control or protection and hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM), you may be deciding between standard and shallow-mount bollards.
Read on for more information on shallow mount bollards, and contact the Security Solutions team for a quote.
In some locations, it’s not possible to excavate the depth needed to install traditional bollards. In these situations, shallow mount bollards can be the ideal solution. These security bollards can be installed at a shallower depth, making them an excellent choice for sites with existing infrastructure or where there is limited space for deep foundations.
Despite the shallower installation, they still offer strong protection against vehicle impact, providing security and safety without significant disruption to the area.
As with other types of bollards, HVM shallow mount bollards are available as fixed or retractable. So, what’s the difference?
Fixed shallow mount bollards are permanently installed in the ground. They offer constant protection and security, making them ideal for high-risk locations where vehicle access is not required.
Retractable shallow mount bollards, on the other hand, can be lowered to offer vehicle access when needed. They offer more flexibility and come with either manual or automatic raising and lowering capabilities.
With over 10 years in the physical access security industry, we have the knowledge and experience to develop robust bollards for all applications. Along with our fixed and rising bollards, we’re pleased to offer a range of highly effective, crash-tested shallow mount bollards.
With more and more sites needing underground services, from drainage to utilities, we developed a retractable bollard that requires minimal excavation. The SSSB Cobra Shallow Mount Retractable Bollard is designed for locations with limited space for deep foundations, where occasional access may be required.
Crash-tested to withstand 7.5-tonne vehicles at speeds of 48 kph and 64 kph, it offers high security for government buildings, critical infrastructure, and public spaces.

Our fixed shallow mount bollards are another effective HVM solution. We can customise these bollards to provide protection against a range of threats, from vandalism to extreme risks like Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs). They have been rigorously impact-tested in multiple scenarios to make sure they can withstand vehicle collisions and provide robust security for critical infrastructure and public spaces.

There’s no strict minimum height for bollards, but most tend to be between 800 mm and 1200mm. We generally recommend a height of 900mm to 1000mm for security bollards to ensure they are visible and effective in deterring vehicles.
