The London Fire Brigade is the largest fire brigade in the UK with over 5096 operational firefighters based at over 102 locations in London. Security Solutions were appointed to repair essential security gate equipment at Walthamstow Fire Station. Walthamstow Fire Station boasts three fire engines which covers emergency calls in North East London.
The station had experienced multiple problems with their automatic security gate system. Security Solutions were recommended to the brigade following the service, repair and gate safety upgrade work carried out as part of an ongoing contract in Central London.
On the initial site survey the Security Solutions engineer found the gate was not compliant to current safety regulations, had been out of action for some time and was being operated manually. The gate was tested for operation and control and was found that an incorrectly sized safety edge had been wrongly positioned faulting the control panel and gate operation.
A full safety upgrade was required to bring the gate in line with current DHF / HSE safety regulations. This included removal of defected and incorrect safety edges and poorly positioned photocells, introduction of a full mesh fence run back enclosure and fitting additional safety devices, warning signage and sounder.
The gate track also required attention, removal of debris, dirt build up and the requirement of new ducting. An extensive clean, de rust and lubrication of the gate’s operation chain and guide wheels completed the upgrade. The gate was then fully tested along with the intercom system and was handed over to LFB Walthamstow Station fully operational.
After reviewing Security Solutions work at Walthamstow, London Fire Brigade have approved for similar works to be carried out by Security Solutions at Lambeth Fire Station.
