Olynpic Stadium Security Solutions GBNinety six turnstiles built and installed by Security Solutions will be given the ultimate test by hundreds of thousands of rugby fans as the Rugby World Cup 2015 prepares to kick off. The Bolton based engineering firm landed the contract to supply and install 96 turnstiles as part of Balfour Beatty’s huge transformation programme at the former Olympic Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Park, East London.

More than 150,000 sports fans have already passed through the specifically designed turnstiles as the multi-use venue played host to the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games athletics meet in July and a Barbarians versus Samoa rugby union match in August. A quarter of a million spectators are expected as the venue hosts five matches in the Rugby World Cup 2015 this September and October.

The new venue will also become the permanent home of West Ham United Football Club from August 2016 as well as the new national competition centre for athletics in the UK.

Brian Wilkinson, Senior Operations Manager, who led the design/project team at Security Solutions, explains:

“The biggest challenge was not only the unique design of the Turnstiles, but the integration of an SR2 LPS1175 Twin Sliding Door into the Turnstile Structure.  Alongside this was the need to meet the high expectations and demands of the Architects.  Using the many years of experience we have, we were able to take our basic Turnstile Pod design, and modify it vastly to create and deliver a vision that was only previously imaginable on our 3D simulation software”

“One of the key factors in the success of the project was early engagement with architects Populous and Balfour Beatty, the main contractor, as the specification stated that there were to be no fixings, no locks and no horizontal lines on the turnstiles requiring design changes to our standard stadia products. We also had to design and incorporate a steel soffit system to sit on the top of the turnstiles along with integrating the pods with the existing structure that supports the stadium roof”

Olympic Stadium Security Solutions GBAt the Security Solutions manufacturing facility in Bolton 48 double pods housing the 96 full height turnstiles were manufactured from stainless steel, mild steel and powder coated in the West Ham United’s famous claret colour. The specification also required the design of 48 high security SR2 rated turnstile doors along with 18 interlocking doors that complied fully with LPS1175 of the Loss Prevention Scheme The doors achieved the SR2 rating following the rigorous physical attack tests carried out and meeting the demanding design specification.

The internal turnstiles had fewer challenges as our standard products met with the specification and a total of 10 lanes of half height Glass wings and 2 lanes of DDA Compliant intelligates were installed to the two VIP entrance areas.

Internal Turnstiles Security Solutions GBThe Security Solutions team had to work closely on site with the access control supplier to ensure complete integration of the external and internal turnstiles with the stadiums access control, ticketing and Stadia Count systems along with meeting the requirements of the Fire Policy for the fast and safe evacuation of the stadium in the event of an alarm.

Andrew Davies, Managing Director at Security Solutions, added:

“Large projects like the former Olympic Stadium do throw out challenges for any sub contract suppliers but Security Solutions experience and knowledge of Stadia projects and our in-house capabilities to deliver the full turnkey solution from design, manufacture, install to commissioning combined with great teamwork throughout the company is what makes us stand out from the competition and underpins our success”

“We approach all our installations with the same amount of care and dedication from a single traffic barrier installation at an office car park to multiple crash rated road blockers at a nuclear power plant”

“We have invested heavily over the past 13 years in developing and testing our product range, training our workforce and providing a reliable service to our clients, all of this has allowed us to build and maintain a solid reputation as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of security equipment”
